Course Objectives The objective of this course is to provide students with a basic knowledge of soil mechanics, the essential concepts of the physical and mechanical properties of soils as a engineering material and the fundamental principles of soil mechanics. Upon completion of the course, students should gain an understanding of the geologic processes related to the formation of different soils, appreciation of factors affecting the engineering properties of soils, the importance of water in the soil and the effects of water movement, the effective stress principle and the consolidation and bearing behaviour of soils.

Courses are taught to students using computer. Typical problems are solved and some laboratory experiments in the laboratory are introduced.
