Course Objectives To teach historical development of Plate Tectonics. To give general acteristics of the internal structure of the Earth. To introduce mechanism and resources of earthquakes. To present the general, geophysical, magmatism, metamorphism and sedimentation features of plate boundaries. To introduce orogeny and tectonics of inner-plate.

Course Learning Methods and Techniquies
The topics of the course are choseen as sequentially. Since visuality is importan in teaching, the course is given as lantern slide lectures and film shows. Homeworks are given and quizes are done.

2 Seismic waves. Seismicity of Turkey.
3 internal structure of the earth and its seismological basis.
4 Classical theories of orogenesis. Classical geotectonic idioms. Definition and general characteristics.
5 Definition of Plate Tectonics and general characteristics.
6 Sea flor spreading. Definition and general characteristics, tectonism and volcanism.
7 Heat flow, magmatism, metamorphism and sedimentation in sea flor spreading,
8 Transform faults. Definition, origin, tectonics, and type of it.
9 Subduction zones: General morphology, geophysical and magmatism acteristics.
10 Midterm exam.
11 Metamorphism and sedimentation in subduction zones.
12 Orogenic belts. General features and type of orogenic belts.
13 Classification of orogenic belts.
14 Determination of orogenic belts and orogenic systems of Turkey.
15 Inner plate tectonics. Definition, hot spots, and related tectonism.
