Purpose: Aim of the department of German Language and Literature is to train philologists equipped with knowledge and attitudes, who can conduct international relationships, recognize ethical values and can integrate them with our countrys values. As a principle, undergraduate program planned to suit eight semesters, aims to provide students with advanced language ss and concepts of literature and linguistics as well as cultural and professional competence.

Vision: Studying of works written in German, translating them into Turkish, comparing them with Turkish literature, establishing healthy communication through linguistics, investigating languages diachronically and synchronically stand as the perspectives of the department.

Mission: As windows to the world, Language departments, will help to introduce our country to other countries, and be a bridge between the cultural, economic and political structures of our country and German speaking countries. Thus they will improve our countrys point of view while introducing German cultural, economic and political structures to our scientists and politicians.

Program Language: German

Program Description: The Department consists of two major fields: German Culture-Literature and Linguistics. As permanent staff, there are 2 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Lecturer and 2 Research Assistants in the department of German Language and Literature. Together with the permanent staff, 3 Assistant Professors from the Department of Comparative Literature contribute to this department.

Admissions Requirements: (S.U. REGULATIONS OF EXAM IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING) REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTION AND REGISTRATION SECTION 5 (1) Requirements in registration to Selçuk University are below: a-) To have graduated from a high school or an equivalent vocational school. b-) To have deserved the right of registration to the departments of Selçuk University, according to the result of central placement test or to the SELCUK UNIVERSITY REGULATION FOR THE APPLICATION, ACCEPTANCE AND REGISTRATION OF STUDENTS FROM ABROAD. For the departments accepting students with aptitude and ability tests, to have the required qualifications and a sufficient score valid for that academic year and to succeed in the aptitude and ability test that will be given. c-) To bring documents specified in ÖSYM guide book for registration. d-) Not to be registered to another formal education program or to a quota-restricted university or to a remote training undergraduate program simultaneously for those who have the right to register to an undergraduate program. Also, not to be registered to another formal education program or to an university or to a remote training associate program simultaneously for those who have the right to register to an associate degree. (2) Original or university-certified copy of required documents are accepted. In relation to military status and criminal record, transaction will be performed on the basis of candidates declaration. Applicants who deserve to register to the university must apply personally for the registration. But those who cannot apply personally due to an apology can register through notary proxy holders or legal representatives.

Recognition of Prior Learning: Recognition of prior formal education in Turkish higher education institutes, vertical and horizontal transitions within the university are carried out in respect of the basis of the YÖK determined regulations that are related to the regulation of TRANSITION BETWEEN ASSOCIATE DEGREE AND UNDERGRADUATE-LEVEL PROGRAMS, DOUBLE MAJOR, SUBSPECIALITY AND INTERINSTITUTIONAL CREDIT TRANSFER IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS. In Turkey, recognition process of certificate-based or experience-based (informal and non-formal) education except for formal education has not started yet. Therefore, recognition of prior education has not started exactly in all programs of Selçuk University. But for the courses in training plans like Computer, English and German, proficiency exams are held at the ninth of each academic term. Students considering that they provide the expected qualifications have the right to take examinations. Students taking and passing examination are exempted from courses.

Graduation Requirements: SECTION 22(1) To graduate from the registered program, a student must succeed the courses prescribed for graduation, complete the practices like internship successfully and his/her weighted grade point average must be at least 2.00. (2) Graduation date of student is the last day of that exam term. But the students, who cannot graduate by this date because of some reasons like one course, internship, industry-based training, and graduate thesis/assignment and field work graduate at the date of passing the one course exam or acceptance of successfully completed studies of these. Students whose graduation transported to the next semester must also pay contribution fee or evening education tuition of that semester. But the students passing one course exam dont pay the tuition of that semester.

Principles of Assessment and Evaluation: SECTION 13 (1)The success of the student in a course is determined after the final / make up exam by the instructor responsible for that course, taking into consideration that the 40 per cent of intermediate exam / exams and the 60 per cent of final / make up exam and the grade average is converted to letter grade. (2)In order to be successful in a course, the letter grades that the student received must be at least CC. Instructor can bring down the grade range in the table below. However, he/she cannot determine a letter grade lower than the letter grade that corresponds to the average grade composed by the method above. Students having the same grades cannot take different letter grades. Letter grade given to a student cannot be lower than the letter grade of the student who has a lower grade. (3) Letter grades and coefficient of them are shown below. AA, BA, BB, CB, CC: Successful. DC, DD: If the weighted grade average of the student in a semester / year is 2.00 or more, he/she is successful or passes conditionally. If not, he/she is unsuccessful. FD, FF: Unsuccessful. F: Because of absence or failure in applications, studen doesnt have the right to take final exam. G: Passes. Successful in non-credit courses. K: Fails. Unsuccessful in non-credit courses. M: Exempt. This is the recorded grade that students have in the program they followed and counted as successful according to the determination of the Board of the Directors in the adaptation of the students accepted by vertical/horizontal transition from a higher education program or of those who have the right to be re-registered by central placing while studying at another higher education program, to the related program, SECTION 15 (1) A student taking one of the AA, BA, BB, CB, CC grades is considered successful in that course. Weighted grade average of a student in a semester/year, taking one of the DC, DD grades, must be 2.00 in order to be considered successful in this course. Otherwise these students have to take the courses again. (2) Determination related to the passes conditionally (DC, DD) grades are made after the make-up exams.

Employment Opportunities: Students graduated from our department may become German teachers in public or private schools or can be employed in tourism industry, banking, media, government agencies, foreign affairs, foreign trade, private companies as multilingual staff.

Jump to Top Degree Programs: Provided that the candidates having completed the undergraduate degree successfully, take valid grade from ALES exam and have adequate knowledge of foreign languages except for their own field, may study in a post-graduation program in their own field or related fields.
